This study tour, funded by the C.S. Mott Foundation and led in partnership with the Collaborative for Building After-School Systems, gave federal policymakers an opportunity to examine the expanded learning time model currently in use in New York City public schools. ELT is being used as a tool to close the achievement gap and provide disadvantaged youth with opportunities not typically available during the traditional school day. The trip included visits to The Lorraine Hansberry Academy (P.S./I.S. 214) and Young Scholars’ Academy for Discovery and Exploration (P.S. 636) and presentations from Lucy Friedman, President of The After-School Corporation; Jeanne Mullgrav, Commissioner of the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development; and Gregg Betheil, Executive Director, Schools, Programs, and Partnerships, NYC Department of Education.
