On January 20th, BYEN’s Everyday Explorer AmeriCorps members will be participating in an organized service project with Boston Cares for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. The members will join other volunteers in Boston for a day of community service activities at the Curley School in Jamaica Plain.

About the Everyday Explorers

BYEN’s Everyday Explorers AmeriCorps Program places 15 AmeriCorps members trained in Environmental Education and service projects in after-school programs to facilitate science learning opportunities in Boston.  Everyday Explorers aims to encourage community service for its program participants, and use that as a forum for environmental learning and stewardship.

Through environmental service learning projects and after-school activities, Everyday Explorers provide program participants with opportunities for hands-on, experiential learning that foster school success and greater engagement while allowing youth to form close, informal relationships with adults who can act as role models.

National Days of Service

MLK Service Day

National days of service are recognized across the country.  There are three days in particular, Make a Difference Day, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, and AmeriCorps Week, when AmeriCorps members are expected to participate in an organized service project.

This year, on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the members will be volunteering with Boston Cares at the Curley School in Jamaica Plain.  Here, they will be engaging in various projects such as decorating quilt squares, painting murals and making scarves. The work being done by the volunteers and our members will directly benefit local agencies and schools throughout the Boston Metro area.

BostonCares provides a wonderful opportunity for the public to serve their community and honor of the life and legacy of MLK on a day off from work. The event is family friendly and offers two different shift times to accommodate everyone. If you’re interested in joining the Everyday Explorers in making a difference on MLK Day, please visit the BostonCares website for information on how to sign up.

Hopefully we’ll see you there!
