Tenacity is a rapidly growing youth development organization providing intensive athletic, academic, and life skills development programs to Boston youth. The mission of Tenacity is to improve the scholastic, character, and physical development of multicultural, urban youth by combining tennis instruction and academic support with a focus on life skills. This vision is realized by two distinct yet complementary core programs: the three-year After-School Excellence Program (ASEP) consisting of intensive tennis, literacy, and life-skills development tutoring for Boston middle school students, and the Summer Tennis and Reading Program consisting of free tennis instruction and reading for children ages 7-15 offered in partnership with Boston Centers for Youth and Families (BCYF). Three additional offerings complement these core programs: ASEP Alumni Club, Elementary School Tennis, and High School Tennis.
Job Responsibilities:
1) Work as a team with the Tennis Coordinator to manage all aspects of the After-School Excellence Program (ASEP) at a particular site. This includes:
a) Selecting/ recruiting and registering up to 35 students for the program
b) Meeting with students and families in their homes at least twice a year to discuss program guidelines and commitment
c) Helping to arrange for transportation of children from school to the program site and then home
d) Assisting in the design and implementation of a program evaluation process involving students, parents, and school-day personnel
e) Ensuring that the academic and tennis activities are supporting each other, especially in the area of life skills development2) Run the literacy program at a particular site. This includes:
a) Implementing Tenacity’s Literacy Curriculum
i) Facilitate whole group activities based on our curriculum
ii) Create and monitor progress of student literacy groups, which will be run by volunteer and part-time tutorsb) Managing behavior and providing one-on-one support to students experiencing behavioral, social, or academic difficulties
3) Recruit, train, schedule, and assign volunteer/ work-study tutors to run literacy groups
4) Design and implement a process with the partner schools’ teachers to ensure we understand what the overall academic standing, homework assignments, and learning priorities are and to help resolve these issues for individual students
5) Work throughout the summer as a Reading Coordinator, developing curriculum, or on other projects
6) Assist with developing and implementing strategic growth objectives, such as:
a) adding new teams of students and staff within existing schools
b) adding new schools7) As a staff team member of a dynamic, growing organization, work on a variety of projects (fundraising, administrative, program support, etc. etc…) as requested by the Program Director and President
Key Relationships:- Work in close partnership with Tennis Coordinator
- Supervise AmeriCorps members & tutors
- Along with other Tenacity staff, liaison to schools, including teachers and others
- In partnership with other Tenacity staff members, liaison to parents and students
- Report to School Year Program Director
- Trustworthy, high energy, high integrity, flexible, organized
- Willingness and availability to work in an intense non-profit environment and put in long hours as the work demands
- Masters in Education or related field preferred but not required
- Significant teaching and program management experience, preferably in a middle school or a start-up, fast-growth organization serving urban, multi-cultural constituents
- Counseling experience and/or course work a plus
- Able to work with others in a collaborative team environment
- A passion for children, this program, and the Boston community
- Proficiency in verbal and written communication, Microsoft Word, Excel
- Ability to speak Spanish, Cape Verdean or Chinese a plus
