Museum director: Not child's play
Cultural institutions that build or rebuild their facilities often enjoy a spurt in attendance only to see it fall as the novelty wears off. Lou Casagrande, now stepping down after 15 years as head of the Children's Museum, can take pride in the fact that the museum, which had 400,000 visitors a year before its $47 million expansion, has maintained the jump to 550,000 two years after its reopening. The museum board is conducting a nationwide search to find his successor, and the board should look for a leader not just for the museum but for the local nonprofit community. It was such a search that brought Casagrande to Boston from St. Paul. Casagrande will continue working for kids - he will become chairman of Boston After School & Beyond, a public-private partnership.
